Commonwealth-era Stewart Crystal Gold Hairwork Mourning Brooch for Sir Thomas Dickinson M.P 1676 Antique
Description
Details: A stunning high-carat gold commonwealth period stewart crystal mourning brooch with a square hairwork section overlain with gold initials reading 'S.T.D' for Sir Thomas Dickenson the Lord Mayor of York for two terms in 1656 & 1657, unusually knighted by Oliver Cromwell. Dickinson was also a prominent merchant and politician in the commonwealth government, a close confident of Cromwell himself. The initials are flanked by two cherubs holding a crown, a symbol that was forbidden by Cromwell adding further intrigue to the brooch. The stewart crystal is mounted in high-carat gold that tests as 18ct-20ct. The reverse of the brooch bears the inscription 'Sir Thos Dickinson Knt M.P Civit Ebor'. This is a superb example of early jewellery and truly a museum quality example with excellent provenance.
